Same Pot Size, Totally Different Succulent Sizes: Here’s Why
If you’ve ever opened your Succly Box and thought:

“How is one of these huge… and the other is tiny… when they’re the same pot size?!”

Let's break it down.

Succulents are living plants, and one of the coolest (and most confusing) things about them is that different varieties grow in completely different ways, even when they’re the same age and in the same size nursery pot.

Let’s break down why this happens, what’s normal, and why it’s actually a good thing.

1) Pot size doesn’t mean plant size

A pot size in inches is simply the size of the nursery container. It’s not a guarantee that every plant will look the same height, width, or fullness.

Some succulents naturally look:
• wide and full right away
• compact and tight for a long time
• upright and taller early on
• slow-growing (but worth the wait!)

In other words: the pot size is standardized, but the plant genetics are not.

2) Growth habits are wildly different (even when plants are the same age)

Succulents have different “growth styles,” and this is the biggest reason size varies.

Upright growers- Some varieties naturally grow tall and upward. They may look “bigger” faster because they gain height early.

Single-stem growers. For example, Baby necklace (Crassula marnieriana) often grows as one thinner upright stalk rather than spreading wide. That’s why you’ll sometimes see two to three starter plants planted together in one pot to create a fuller look.

Compact growers- Other varieties stay tight and low to the soil, forming a dense rosette. They often look smaller, even when they’re perfectly healthy.

Spreading growers-Some succulents grow outward and fill the pot edge-to-edge, which makes them look fuller even at a young age.

So yes, you can have:
• one that looks large and full
• another that looks small and compact
…and both are completely normal and healthy.

3) “Fullness” isn’t the same as maturity

This is a big one.

Some succulents naturally have:
• thicker, rounder leaves (they look fuller faster)
• thinner leaves (they may look smaller even when thriving)

A succulent can be young, healthy, and still look compact. In fact, compact growth is often a sign of good conditions (bright light, proper watering, and strong leaf structure).

4) Some plants focus on roots first

Not all succulents put their energy into top growth right away.
Some varieties spend time building a strong root system before they “size up” above the soil.
That means the plant may look smaller at first, but it’s quietly preparing to grow faster later.

5) Season matters more than people think

Succulents don’t grow the same all year.

Depending on the variety, you may see changes in:
• growth speed
• leaf thickness
• color
• compactness

In cooler months, many succulents naturally slow down and stay tighter. In warmer growing seasons, they often plump up faster.

Why we ship “starter plants” (and why it’s a good thing)

At Succly, our plants typically arrive as healthy starter plants.

That’s intentional because starter plants:
• ship more safely
• acclimate better to your environment
• develop strong roots in your home
• grow into the pot beautifully over time

You’re not receiving “random small plants,” you’re receiving starter plants chosen to thrive long term, not just look big for a photo.

The best part: your collection will be way more interesting
This is where it gets fun.

A good succulent collection isn’t made of plants that all look the same.

It’s made of:
• different shapes
• different textures
• different growth styles
• different colors and forms

That variety is what makes collecting succulents so addictive (in the best way).

Over time, you’ll start to recognize growth habits and you’ll know instantly:
• “This one will spread!”
• “This one’s a slow grower!”
• “This one’s going to get tall!”

Final thoughts

Even if two succulents are:
• the same pot size
• the same age

They can look totally different because succulents grow differently by nature. Compact does not mean unhealthy, and bigger does not mean “better.”

Every Succly plant is selected to be healthy, true to variety, and ready to grow into its full potential.
