🌵 Succulent Care 101: How to Keep Your Plant Happy & Thriving

Succulents are gorgeous, low maintenance plants but even these hardy little guys need some TLC to stay healthy. Here’s your quick start guide to caring for your succulents!
Give Them Plenty of Light
    •    Succulents love bright, indirect sunlight. A sunny windowsill is perfect.'
    •    Aim for 4-6 hours of light per day.
  •    If leaves start stretching out or losing color, they’re probably looking formore sun.
Water Sparingly
    •    Rule #1: Let the soil dry out completely between waterings.
    •    Water deeply until it drains from the bottom (if your pot has holes), but don’t let them sit in standing water. A pot without holes is more likely to give your succulent root rot.
    •    During spring and summer (growing season), water every 1–2 weeks, in fall and winter, every 3–4 weeks. Overwatering is the #1 killer of succulents.
Choose the Right Soil
    •    Use a well draining cactus or succulent soil mix. Perlite is also great for fast draining.
    •    Avoid regular potting soil, it stays too wet for too long, causing root rot.

 Pick the Right Pot
    •    Drainage holes are best!
    •    If you love a decorative pot without holes, add a thick layer of rocks at the bottom and water extra carefully ensuring the roots don't stay wet for too long. You can also pick a decorative pot that holds the plastic pots your succulents come in so you can remove them, water them, then put them back in the decorative pot.

 Watch for Signs of Trouble
    •    Wrinkly, shriveled, dark leaves? Too little water.
    •    Mushy, black leaves or stems? Overwatering or root rot.
    •    Pale, stretched out growth? Not enough light.
Bonus Tips
    •    Gently remove fallen/dead leaves to prevent pests.
    •    Rotate your succulent every few weeks so all sides get sunlight.
    •    Don’t fertilize too often once or twice a year in spring/summer is plenty. You can use a low nitogen fertilzer and dilute it to quarter strength. Organic options like worm castings and compost tea are great options as well.
Succulents thrive on a little neglect, give them sunlight, water only when dry, and let them shine. Happy planting!
