Crassula pellucida variegata ‘Calico Kitten’

How to Care for Calico Kitten

Light

It thrives in bright indirect light and can handle several hours of shaded morning sun. Bright light encourages the pink and cream colors that makes it so popular. If its grown in lower light the colors might be more muted and the stems can stretch as the plant searches for more sunlight. Indoor growing light is best as an east-facing window. In hotter weather protect it from harsh afternoon sun so the leaves don't scortch.

Water

It prefers a soak-and-dry watering routine. Water thoroughly until water drains from the bottom of the pot, then allow the soil to dry completely before watering again. Overwatering is the most common issue. Wrinkled leaves means it's thirsty and  mushy stems or dropping leaves often mean too much water.

Soil

Fast-draining soil is essential. A cactus or succulent mix works well especially when amended with additional pumice or perlite. Good drainage helps protect the roots and keeps the plant healthy. Always use containers with drainage holes.

Temperature

It prefers temperatures between 60°F and 80°F. It loves warm weather but is not frost tolerant. If temperatures are expected to drop below 40°F, it’s best to bring it indoors or provide protection from the cold.

Fertilizer

It is not a heavy feeder. Use a diluted succulent fertilizer once every 4 to 6 weeks during spring and summer if needed. Too much fertilizer can encourage weak, stretched growth.

Blooming

Mature plants might produce clusters of small white star-shaped flowers typically during warmer months.

Calico Kitten may cause mild to moderate symptoms if ingested, such as vomiting or stomach upset. We recommend keeping it out of reach of pets and curious children.

Humidity

Average household humidity is usually perfect for it. Unlike many tropical houseplants  it does not require extra humidity and generally likes good airflow.

Propagation

One of the best things about it is how easy it is to propagate. Take a healthy stem cutting, allow the cut end to dry for a day or two and then place it on well-draining soil. New roots begin forming within a few weeks.

Stretching or Long Gaps Between Leaves means not enough light. Move your plant to a brighter location with several hours of indirect light or light morning sun.

Mushy Stems means overwatering or poor drainage. Allow the soil to dry completely and check that the pot drains properly.

Leaves Falling Off Cause means stress from overwatering, underwatering, or sudden environmental changes. Check watering habits and avoid dramatic temperature swings.

Colors Fading means insufficient light. Gradually increase light to encourage stronger pink coloration.

Brown or Crispy Leaves means excessive direct sun or prolonged thirst. Give protection from intense afternoon sun and adjust watering as needed.
