Kalanchoe luciae-Paddle Plant (Flapjacks)

Kalanchoe luciae, also known as the Paddle Plant or Flapjacks, is a dramatic succulent with wide, flat leaves that resemble stacked paddles or flapjacks. The leaves are green in the center and turn beautiful shades of red around the edges when put in strong sunlight or cooler weather, making it a standout in any collection.

What Makes it Special?

The Paddle Plant is all about its bold form and color. Its large rosettes create instant impact in containers or garden beds. The color shift from season changes make it exciting to watch year round.

How to Care for the Paddle Plant

Light

Loves bright, direct light (be sure to harden it off prior to full sun). The more sun it gets, the stronger the red leaf margins. Indoors, place near a south facing window or under grow lights.

Water

Water deeply, then allow the soil to dry out completely. Paddle Plants are drought tolerant but sensitive to overwatering, so lean dry rather than wet.

Soil

Use a fast draining succulent or cactus mix. Adding perlite or pumice helps keep roots healthy.

Temperature

Thrives in warmth between 60–85°F. Protect from frost; bring indoors if temperatures drop below 50°F.

Fertilizer

Feed monthly during spring and summer with a diluted succulent fertilizer.

Blooming

Mature plants may send up tall stalks with clusters of fragrant yellow flowers in late winter to spring. After blooming, the main rosette often dies back but produces offsets at the base.

Pet Safe?

Kalanchoe luciae is toxic to pets if ingested. Keep out of reach of cats and dogs.

Humidity

Prefers low humidity. Too much moisture in the air can encourage rot.

Propagation

Propagate from offsets or by taking leaf/paddle cuttings and letting them callus before planting in dry soil.
