String of Pearls- The show stopping trailing succulent

The Ultimate Guide to Growing & Loving This Stunning Succulent

If you’ve ever spotted a trailing plant that looks like tiny green pearls on a string, congrats, you’ve met the Senecio rowleyanus, more charmingly known as String of Pearls. This succulent is not only Insta famousbut also surprisingly easy to grow once you know its needs.

Whether you just unboxed your Succly subscription or picked one up from your favorite plant shop, here’s everything you need to keep your String of Pearls happy and thriving.

Light: Bright & Indirect Is Best

String of Pearls loves bright, indirect light. A sunny east or west facing window is ideal. Too much direct sun can scorch the pearls, while too little will make the plant stretch and become sparse.

Pro Tip: If your pearls are looking leggy or spaced out, they’re probably chasing more light!

 Watering: Less Is More

Like most succulents, String of Pearls is sensitive to overwatering. Its round leaves store water, so it doesn’t need much from you.

    •    Water deeply when the top 1–2 inches of soil are dry

    •    Make sure your pot has drainage holes

    •    In winter, cut watering frequency in half

Warning: If pearls are turning mushy or translucent, you’re overwatering.

Soil: Fast-Draining Mix Is a Must

Use a well draining cactus or succulent soil mix. You can improve drainage by adding perlite or coarse sand. This helps prevent root rot, which String of Pearls is very prone to.

 Temperature & Humidity

    •    Ideal temp: 70–80°F during the day, no lower than 50°F at night

    •    Humidity: Average home humidity is fine. No need to mist!

Keep it away from cold drafts or heaters, this plant loves consistency.

Pruning & Propagation

If your plant gets leggy or you want to share the love:

    •    Snip a few strands just below a node (where the pearls attach)

    •    Let cuttings dry for a day or two

    •    Lay them on soil and mist lightly until roots form

In a few weeks, you’ll have new baby pearls growing in!
 Potting & Repotting

    •    Repot every 1–2 years or when roots outgrow the pot

    •    Use a shallow pot, these guys don’t need deep soil

    •    Be gentle: pearls pop off easily!
