Graptosedum 'Alpenglow' -Vera Higgins

Meet Graptosedum Vera Higgins also known as Bronze Sedum, a hybrid between Graptopetalum paraguayense and Sedum stahlii. This succulent forms tidy rosettes of leaves that range from soft green to rich coppery bronze, especially when grown in bright light. It trails beautifully over pot edges, making it perfect for arrangements, hanging planters, or your next Succly shelf display.

What Makes It Special?

This plant is a shapeshifter of colors. Its color deepens from green to warm mahogany depending on sun exposure and season, adding warmth to any collection. Vera Higgins is also resilient and a forgiving, succulent thriving even when you forget a watering or two. It’s one of those low maintenance beauties that looks like you worked way harder than you did. Hence why we love succulents so much!

How to Care for It

Light

Give your Vera Higgins plenty of bright, indirect sunlight or direct morning sun. Indoors, place near a south or west facing window. Outdoors, full sun will bring out its best bronze tones, but protect it from harsh afternoon sun in very hot climates.

Water

Water deeply only when the soil is completely dry. Like most succulents, Vera Higgins dislikes “wet feet.” Overwatering leads to leaf drop and root rot. During active growing season (spring to early fall), water roughly every 10-14 days; in winter, cut back to once a month or even less.

Soil

A gritty, fast draining succulent mix is essential. Combine potting soil with coarse sand, pumice, or perlite (roughly 2:1:1) for perfect drainage.

Temperature

Ideal range: 65–80°F. It can handle brief dips to about 40°F but should be brought indoors if frost is expected.

Fertilizer

Feed lightly once in spring and again in mid summer with a diluted cactus or succulent fertilizer (¼ strength). Avoid fertilizing in winter when growth naturally slows down.

Blooming

In late spring or summer, it blooms a small star shaped yellow/orange flower on thin stalks, beautiful contrast against the bronze leaves.

Pet Safe?

Non toxic to cats and dogs according to the ASPCA, so your furry friends are safe around this one.

Humidity

Prefers dry air. High humidity can promote rot, so keep it away from bathrooms or terrariums.

Propagation

Extremely easy. Snip a rosette or remove a healthy leaf, let it callous for 1–2 days, then place on dry soil. Mist lightly until roots appear. It roots fast so its a great one to propagate.

Why We Picked This Plant

We chose Graptosedum Vera Higgins for November because it captures everything we love about this season. Its copper/rose tones deepen as the days get cooler, fitting right in with cozy sweaters and shorter days. The color also matches the change of season and the leaves falling off trees. 🍂

If this bronzy succulent showed up in your Succly Box, congratulations, you’ve got yourself a STUNNING succulent.
